Heartherwick Studio’s goal was to create a school focused
around encouraging spontaneous dialogue and exchange between students. The response
consisted of a central naturally ventilated atrium with balconies that connect
every room on their respected levels. The second (DETAIL) image really provides
a good indication of how this works. There is definitely something to be drawn
from in terms of the camera angle here.
The project has a handmade clay like materiality and texture
which has been achieved by casting bespoke concrete panels. The horizontal cast
texture along with how the concrete forms are fenestrated helps break down the
buildings bulk and presents at a more human scale.
