Steilneset Memorial

The Steilneset Memorial is collaboration between Swiss architect Peter Zumthor and contemporary French-American artist Louise Bourgeois (Paris, 1911-2010). It was built in memory of those persecuted in the seventeenth century Finnmark Witchcraft trials.

The first (HERO) image shows the two different approaches taken by both Bourgeois and Zumthor:

Bourgeois – point – “an installation more about burning and aggression”
Zumthor – Line – “an installation more about life and emotions”

in experiment one you were asked to essentially create an architecture around evocative words. This project demonstrates how words can influence architecture. It also provides a good example of how two very different architectures which have been created using different approaches can still sit together harmoniously.

To me though this project has one more element essential to its success – the environment where it sits. This may actually be the most important element. The hero shot definitely dramatizes this. In experiment one the environment is designed / chosen by you, the student. This as an opportunity to create the perfect site for the architecture (something that most often occurs the other way around) and really use it for dramatic effect.

The second (DETAIL) image is an interior view looking through the 120m long corridor where 91 windows are illuminated by 91 hanging light bulbs symbolising the 91 people convicted of sorcery and burnt at the stake. This is a powerful image and there are several things that can be taken from it / questions to ask about your own experiment one.

1.       Movement / Flow / Circulation: How can the design of circulation and movement enhance the architecture. Has this been considered in Experiment One:

2.       Lighting: How can lighting (both natural and artificial) form a connection to the intent of an architecture.

The last thing to take from this detail image is the composition of the image itself. The one-point perspective used here is a powerful tool which helps emphasize the elongated nature of Zumthor’s part in the project.
